Default Custom ringtones on your iphone

How to create custom ringtones for your iphone using itunes and best of all its FREE !!!

Step 1)

You'll need your ringtone in mp3 format first and short about 30 secs max. You can download one from our download section here.

Step 2)

Open itunes, Then select "File" , "Add File to Library" and select the mp3 ringtone you downloaded.

Step 3)

The mp3 ringtone you just selected in step 2 should now been shown in your itunes library. Right click the mp3 and select "Convert Selection to AAC". You should see the top itunes showing the converting progress. After its converted itunes normally starts to play the track.

Step 4)

You should now see 2 tracks with the same name in your itunes library, one will be the mp3 version and the 2nd will be the new AAC version you just created. Right click the AAC version and select "copy" (if your not sure which is the AAC version right click each of them and select "Get Info" and under "kind" one will show as AAC and the other will show as MPEG.)

Step 5)

Paste the AAC file on to your desktop. To do this click the show desktop icon next to the "start" icon in the bottom left of your screen, then right click your mouse anywhere on the desktop and select "paste".

Step 6)

You should now see an icon on your desktop called the name of your ringtone. Right click the icon and select "rename" and change the file name extension from m4a to .m4r and hit enter.

Step 7)

Double left click your ringtone icon on your desktop and itunes should open on the ringtone screen, Now assuming your ringtone file size is less small enough (less than 30 secs normally) you should be able to select your iphone from the left menu, then select the ringtone tab and your ringtone should now been shown in the box. Either select to Sync all ringtones or tick the ringtone you have just created and hit the Sync button in the bottom right of the itunes window.

Step 8)

On your iphone select "settings" then slect "sounds" , then select "Ringtone" and at the top you should see customs ringtones and your new ringtone should be available to select.

Step 9)

Enjoy your FREE custom ringtone on your apple iphone.

Any question please ask and i will help where possible.

Chris.

Since you're posting this today (03/01), I assume this will work with the new 1.1.4 software? Thanks.

Unhappy Help!!

I dowloaded the "taliban" ringtone here. (The Allah calling one) and I keep trying to paste it to my desktop as the AAC Format, but it keeps pasting the MP3 format (even though I check a billion times to make sure I am copying and pasting the right one). Any suggestions??? Thanks!!

You need to set windows to show the file extenstion.--

Making Extensions Display - Windows XP

In Windows XP open any folder (My Computer or My Documents are good ones). Then...
  • Select Tools | Folder Options
  • Select the View Tab and then
  • Scroll down to the entry that says "Hide file extensions for known file types" and make certain it's not checked.
  • Click on the Apply To All Folders button and then close the window.
With this move you will now see extensions in file directory windows and the option will be picked up by other Microsoft programs like Outlook.
Making Extensions Display - Windows Vista

The procedure for making file extensions show up in Vista is similar to that for Windows XP.
Once you open any Windows Explorer window (e.g., Documents or any other) there are three basic steps:
1) Click on the Organize button.
2) Select the Folder and Search Options menu item.
3) Take the View Tab and scroll down the list to the Hide extensions for known file types item and uncheck it.
While you are there consider marking the Show hidden files and folders item if you are comfortable with that. There are other options there as well if you care to change how Windows displays files and folders.
Making Extensions Display - Windows 98

In Windows 98 double click to open My Computer and then select View | Folder Options. Then...
  • Select the View Tab and then
  • Scroll down to the entry that says "Hide file extensions for known file types" and make certain it's not checked.
  • Click OK and then close the My Computer window.
With this move you will now see extensions in file directory windows and the option will be picked up by other Microsoft programs like Outlook.

Might be worth noting I had a couple of issues as I had to delete the .mp3 AND .aac version of the file AFTER the copying and renaming to .m4r to the file on my desktop.

As soon as I cleared these two files and double clicked the .m4r file on my desktop, it slotted nicely in to the ringtones section of iTunes.

It is easy, just take a deep breath, it will be ok. Just down load any m4r file then just dubble click on it and it will be put in you ring tone dri to up load to you great new phone.

I hope this helps!

Mmmmmm

Took a deep breath and still holding it!

Double clicked, nothing happened. Did the Sync option via itunes, nothing happened.

Looks like I'm destined to suffer the 'Old Phone' ringtone a little longer

I know this is an old thread but you have to delete any existing versions of the ringtone you are trying to add in iTunes BEFORE double clicking the .m4r version.

Anybody still having problems getting custom ringtones on your iphone please see this thread and i will create the m4r file for you that should work on all iphones. All you then need to do is sync your iphone with itunes to get your custom ringtone uploaded.

Chris.

Hi thandi welcome to the forum, You would need to jailbreak your iphone to upload custom sms alert tones.
