Default HTC HD2 smart phone with largest touchscreen dubbed latest iPhone killer

A phone boasting a 4.3in screen is the latest in a long line to be dubbed an "iPhone killer".

The HD2, made by Taiwanese firm HTC, goes on sale in the UK at the end of this month.

Its touchscreen display is the largest installed in a smart phone and matches the Motorola Droid for screen resolution at 480x800, which dwarfs the iPhone.

The device can easily download new software, although there are fewer applications available than for the Apple handset.

The new HTC HD2 mobile phone, which is set to challenge the market supremacy of Apple's iPhone, with one of the biggest screens on the market

'This is the first phone that matches the iPhone in terms of slickness,' said Will Findlater, of technology magazine Stuff.

The handset runs a customised version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile software, which has been tweaked to give a more 'intuitive' response to the user.

Like the iPhone, the screen is highly responsive to touch and allows the user to zoom in and out of web pages, documents and photos.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are all integrated into the phone for the keen social networker.

The HTC HD2 uses the Opera Mobile internet browser and supports an instant messaging service that allows the user to chat by text online with other online friends.

The phone also has a 5MP camera, integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, music player and FM radio.

A rechargeable battery gives around 6.3 hours of GSM talk time or 5.3 hours of 3G talk time. It has a standby time of up to 500 hours.

HTC previously made phones for other companies but has recently started to sell under its own name. It says the special Sense software make it easier to use than Apple's.

'At HTC we believe that the best things in life should be experienced, not explained,' said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

'HTC Sense is based on this principal by making the phone more simple and natural to use and by enabling people to personalise their mobile experience in their own unique way.

'The HD2 melds the power and flexibility of the Windows platform with the most advanced phone we've ever created.'
